Happy World Food Day 2021

Happy World Food Day!

World food day is a campaign to raise awareness around world hunger and food security issues.

The United Nation Organization's Food and Agriculture Association (FAO) was established on 16th October in 1945. To commemorate this day, World Food Day is celebrated every year on October 16th with a new theme. Though it was originally meant to mark the day that the FAO was established, World Food Day eventually became a way to raise awareness about hunger, malnutrition, sustainability and food production.

This is the second time that World Food Day is falling at a time when countries all over the world are reeling from the impact of Covid-19. Last year, the theme was “Grow, Nourish, Sustain. Together.” This was decided due to the suffering of millions during the pandemic.

This year, the focus is on celebrating food heroes or those who have contributed to creating a sustainable world where no one goes hungry. We can all be food heroes and contribute to building a hunger-free world.

Take action and get involved!

We as consumers have the power to reduce food waste, which in turn can help fight food insecurity, protect precious resources, reduce our carbon footprint, save money and energy, and consume more consciously. Do your part!!

Here are a few ways you can begin to take action:

  1. Choose a healthy diet and avoid ultra-processed foods, to influence what the market provides us and maintain a healthy body and environment. By eating just a handful of microgreens, you can add quite a punch of nutrition to every meal!
  2. Select products which are healthy for you and sustainable for the environment too. Read the labels and packaging carefully before selecting the products. Check out 5 sustainable facts about Hamama here.
  3. Improve food storage and reduce wastage at home. As FAO suggests, "Buy what you use and use it all!"
  4. Recycle as much as possible. Try composting and put nutrients back into the soil. You can also start your own green patch of fruits, vegetables, or herbs. So many Hamama products are compostable, yay!
  5. Support small farmers and local producers to nurture local ecosystems.
