Spotlight: Green Bronx Machine

Hi Hamama Friends!

There is something magical about growing your own fruits and vegetables, don’t you think? Gardening gifts you with patience for the growing process and greater appreciation for the food that we consume. It can give you a sense of pride, provide you with peace of mind in regards to food safety, and be a fun and educational pastime for the whole family. Not to mention, a life filled with fruits and vegetables provides you with a healthier and happier lifestyle. When children learn the importance of growing and eating their fruits and vegetables, it can help them build healthy eating habits for the future. We are always looking to support organizations that uplift and educate the community. That is why it is our pleasure to spotlight the Green Bronx Machine!

“Green Bronx Machine builds healthy, equitable, and resilient communities through inspired education, local food systems, and 21st Century workforce development. Dedicated to cultivating minds and harvesting hope, our school-based model using urban agriculture aligned to key school performance indicators grows healthy students and healthy schools to transform communities that are fragmented and marginalized into neighborhoods that are inclusive and thriving.”

Founder, Stephen Ritz has dedicated his life to making sure that students have access to be successful without having to leave their community. He and his team have helped students and the Bronx community grow over 100,000 pounds of vegetables. The Green Bronx community has also been able to employ people within the community while paying a liveable fair wage.

The Green Bronx Machine has expanded deeper in the Bronx community and is dedicated to making fruits and vegetables accessible to everyone. One of the ways that they are doing that is through their project FOOD FOR OTHERS GARDEN. Food for others garden is a student project that provides “a ‘one-stop shop’ helping low-income individuals and families move from crisis to stability, and ultimately self-sufficiency.” This project shows that the power of a community can change lives.

The Green Bronx machine is making a difference one vegetable at a time. Their message is resonating around the world. They have partnered with the following international organizations in the past:

PARTNERSHIP WITH QATAR FOUNDATION INTERNATIONAL

PARTNERSHIP WITH ESOL EDUCATION AND INTERNATIONAL HEALTH WELLNESS AND LEARNING CENTER

Getting children excited about growing their own food builds confidence and shows kids that growing vegetables can be super fun. Hamama created a blog post called Microgreen Growing for Kids! Families loved it and the kids had so much fun. It proved that kids just needed to know that growing vegetables is possible.
